As another month has drawn to a close, it’s time for another update about the latest happenings at Harriss Jones Lawyers and the team.
We’ve welcomed a new team member to our office with the addition of Amelie. Amelie is currently studying law and will be working with us part-time in between her studies. Amelie is currently training with Aurelia and will be front and centre at reception ready to greet you with a smile and assist the team with administration and learn some legal skills along the way.
Kathryn, Melanie and Aurelia recently attended the Cameron O’Brien Bursary dinner. The Cameron O’Brien Bursary is a grant made in memory of Cameron O’Brien, a law student at University of Wollongong who tragically passed away before the end of his studies. This grant aims to assist students with the financial costs of study.
We would like to congratulate Jamie Smith and Ivy Swibel, two of the winners of the Cameron O’Brien Bursary. They have both been offered a work experience placement with our firm so that they can gain further experience and knowledge in their chosen career.
On 21 May, Seth attended a seminar with Lawcover which covered risk management for solicitors. This workshop aims to upskill lawyers to understand the risks that expose solicitors to negligence claims and how to manage risks and client expectations. As our newest solicitor working in Wills & Estates, Probate, Commercial and Family Law, Seth is ready to assist you in your next matter to the best of his abilities and help you understand your options.
On 22 May, our conveyancers Annette and Sarah recently attended a presentation by Tony Cahill, the mind behind the New South Wales property sale contract and legal commentator, who presented the latest updates to property law and what the effects of the changes would be. Annette and Sarah are always ensuring they are up to date on the latest changes in property to make sure your property sale or purchase goes smoothly. They both also recently attended a seminar on navigating part property transfers which was presented by PEXA.
As you may have seen on our social media pages, Harriss Jones Lawyers sponsored the Oyster Bay Art & Craft festival which took place from the 23rd to the 25th of May at Oyster Bay Public School. All funds raised at the festival went to support the school and we are so proud to support our local community through this great event.
On 29 May, Seth attended the opening of the Family Co’s new Hurstville office and also volunteered by providing free family law legal advice at their Jannali office.
We’d like to remind those of you involved in family law matters that on 10 June several amendments to the Family Law Act 1975 will come into effect which will impact family law matters. We recently posted an article about these changes which include direction for courts in deciding property and financial settlements in matters where domestic violence is a key issue, as well as how to deal with the family pets which are now no longer considered property.
Lastly, but most importantly, on 30 May, Sarah one of our conveyancers graduated from University after completion of her legal studies. We are so proud of Sarah’s achievements and have loved watching her continue to expand her knowledge and education whilst working with us.
We are also keen to hear from you, our valued readers and clients, about your experiences with us. If we’ve helped you with a new will or updated an old one, coached you through the purchase of your property, or maybe assisted you with obtaining a Grant of Probate, we would love your feedback. You can leave a Google or Facebook review or write to us at admin@hjlaw.com.au.
As always, congratulations to all our clients who have recently purchased a new property or sold and moved to a new home. We thank you for the trust you’ve placed in our team and we hope you enjoy your new home. Our team looks forward to assisting you with the next one!
