Monthly Update from Harriss Jones Lawyers – November

It’s hard to believe we are already nearing the end of another busy year. We’ve been able to help our clients navigate so many milestones and we’ve branched out into some new practice areas. Here is what has been happening in the month of November at Harriss Jones Lawyers.

Our conveyancers Annette and Sarah attended a seminar presented by the Australian Institute of Conveyancers about how to implement strategies for reducing conveyancing errors and claims including where risks arise in relation to jetties and pontoons as well as due diligence steps concerning self-managed super funds. This was presented by Garth Brown, a leader in conveyancing around Australia. It is always important for our team to attend regular seminars like these to ensure they are ready for any conveyancing challenge that might be thrown their way.

The St George Sutherland Regional Law Society also held its annual Christmas dinner on the 11th November and was attended by our lawyer Seth. This is always a great evening to connect with lawyers around the region and reflect on the achievements of the past year. Kathryn and Melanie have also been elected to server another year on the committee for the St George Sutherland region and are looking forward to another year of helping our local legal community.

On the 19th November, principal solicitor Kathryn attended the Property Law Sub-committee’s monthly meeting. This meeting was privileged to have special guest barrister Andrew Rider to present on current duties and foreign surcharge issues. Andrew is recognised in Doyle’s Guide as a leading tax barrister and has experience across Australia in stamp duties and land tax. Just another great example of the people we can learn from to improve our skills.

We are also proud to note that our solicitor, Seth, was elected to the NSW Council for Civil Liberties. This role will see him involved in a broad range of policy issues across the law led by President Tim Roberts and Vice Presidents Lydia Shelly and Martin Bibby. The Council has been recently acknowledged in its campaign over against the codification of Doli Incapax, a highly controversial issue which will see an increase in children being impacted by the criminal justice system.

If you haven’t noticed already (it’s a bit hard to miss!) but Christmas is almost upon us, and we have almost come to the end of another busy year. We’d like to remind all our clients that we will be taking a much-needed break and as such will be closing at 5pm for the holidays on Friday 19 January 2025. Our office will reopen on Monday 12 January 2026. If you are yet to finalise your estate planning or you’re looking for advice about property, family law matters, planning and development or business planning for the new year, we urge you to book your appointment as soon as possible to ensure you are ready for 2026.

We’d also like to extend our congratulations to all our clients who have recently purchased property or sold and moved into new homes. It’s been a busy month for the conveyancing team as always! We are grateful for your trust and are always here to support you with your legal needs as you move forward.

Our team remains committed to providing high-quality legal services to all our clients. Whether you need assistance with a property transaction, will or business-related matter, we’re here to help.

We’d also love to hear from you! If you’ve worked with us recently, we’d appreciate your feedback. Feel free to leave a Google or Facebook review or drop us a note at admin@hjlaw.com.au. From all of us at Harriss Jones Lawyers, thank you for your continued support. We look forward to helping you navigate the legal landscape in the months ahead.
